The Book of Antrim - by George Henry Bassett, 1888The Book of Antrim is a Directory prepared by George Henry Bassett. A copy is held in Ballymena Library. A trawl through the book has revealed very little reference to the name McShane. A summary of the main information found from a reading o the book is outlined below. There were no records of any McPeake entries as far as I could see :- Page 168 LoughgielLoughgiel (or Loughguile), parish 8 miles south of Ballymoney, in the Barony of Upper Dunluce. The Post Office and a few houses are near the Roman Catholic Church, about a mile from the lake. Farms & Residents Include:- McShane, Jno, Tully North Page 311 AhoghillAhoghill, population of 898 in 1881. It is situated in a parish of the same name, barony of Lower Toome, 4 miles west by north from Ballymena on the way to Portglenone. Most of the inhabitants are handloom linen weavers. The land of the district is good. Dairying is carried on extensively. Page 319 GlenravelGenravel includes the village of Cargan, in the parish of Dunaghy, barony of Kilconway, 10 miles by road north east of Ballymena, and 8 south west of Cushendall. It is an iron mining district. The land is mountainous. Cargan is a station on the Cushendall Railway, but nit for passengers. Farmers & Residents Include:- Under the section on Manufacturers, Traders of County Antrim there are no Agnew or McShane entries however reference is made to Page 94 to an advert from Miss M A McPeak, Ballycastle, listed as Haberdasher and Woollen Draper, Castle Street, Ballycastle. |
